Fans will be waiting a bit longer for BioWare’s Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. The studio had hoped to launch the game this year on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S before moving it back to early 2024. Now, BioWare is moving Dragon Age: Dreadwolf’s release window back to Summer 2024 at the earliest.
According to industry insider Jeff Grubb, BioWare’s internal target was to release Dreadwolf in August 2023. However, the studio delayed the release window to March 2024. Grubb’s sources now report that BioWare is aiming for a Summer 2024 release. He was also careful to clarify that this is the studio’s internal target, not an official release window. Fans should not be surprised if BioWare pushes Dragon Age: Dreadwolf back until late 2024 or early 2025.
Dragon Age: Dreadwolf delayed as BioWare faces layoffs
This news comes as BioWare undergoes a significant reorganization. General Manager Gary McKay recently announced the layoff of about 50 employees. According to McKay, this is a necessary step to address BioWare’s needs and create “a more agile and more focused studio.” Whether these layoffs will help BioWare’s internal problem remains to be seen. However, this may also be a cost-cutting measure following EA’s recent reorganization and Apex Legends’ underperformance.
The timing of these layoffs seems less than ideal if EA and BioWare want Dreadwolf out by next summer. BioWare is reportedly pulling people off of the next Mass Effect to work on Dreadwolf, which will likely impact that game’s development. Hopefully, this is enough to get the game out the door soon without resorting to crunch or releasing an unfinished product. Still, neither the layoffs nor Dragon Age: Dreadwolf’s long and troubled development inspire much confidence.
