The Afterparty Co-Executive Producer Discusses Choosing Edgar’s Killer

The second season of The Afterparty concluded with a revelation regarding Edgar’s (played by Zach Woods) murderer. Now that the case has come to a close, one of the show’s executive producers explained their process of choosing the killer and why that particular character was the perfect choice.

Who Killed Edgar?

In the Season 2 finale, Funcle Ulysses (John Cho) — a fun and totally unsuspicious character — was revealed to be Edgar’s killer all along, although unintentionally. By all means, Ulysses had no reason to kill Edgar, as he actually liked the victim in question. But he was, however, far from innocent; he initially planned on killing his brother Feng (Ken Jeong) so he could have another shot at love with Grace (Poppy Liu). Unfortunately, Edgar accidentally drank the poison-infused whiskey that Ulysses intended to give to his brother.

The Afterparty showrunners Christopher Miller, Anthony King, and Phil Lord spoke with Entertainment Weekly to discuss the second season of the comedy murder mystery series. On the other hand, Miller explained that figuring out the murderer was the first step they took in putting the second season together.

“We figured out the murderer first. That was the first thing we figured out when we were trying to put the season together, and then we figured out how we were going to cover it up. And so Ulysses being the killer was in there from the very beginning, and the whole season was built around that idea so that the reveal will hopefully feel intentional and not just like a random suspect plucked out of a hat,” Miller said.

A Whodunit Mystery with Comedic Elements

The first season of The Afterparty started with a murder that transpired after a high school reunion party. Staying true to the show’s comedic yet mysterious nature, the second season follows a group of wedding partygoers embroiled in an incident that killed the groom.

The official synopsis for Season 2 reads: “A wedding is ruined when the groom is murdered and every guest is a suspect. Detective Danner returns to help Aniq and Zoë solve whodunnit by questioning family members, star-crossed lovers and business partners, and hearing each suspect’s retelling of the weekend, each with their own unique perspective and visual style.”

Since Season 1, The Afterparty has boasted a slew of ensemble cast members. Of course, Season 2 is no different. In addition to Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson, and Zoë Chao reprising their respective roles, some of the new cast members include Paul Walter Hauser as Travis, Anna Konkle as Hannah, Elizabeth Perkins as Isabel, Jack Whitehall as Sebastian, and Vivian Wu as Vivian Zhu.
