Creed Anime Short Film Gets Theatrical US Release Tied to Bottoms

Creed: Shinjidai, a sci-fi anime short that played with Creed III in Japan earlier this year, is coming to United States theaters for a limited time.

MGM Studios announced in a tweet that Creed: Shinjidai will play alongside showings of Bottoms at the Alamo Drafthouse in Los Angeles for one week only, beginning on September 22.

“The teams behind the [Creed] franchise and the iconic anime Megalobox bring you the animated short Creed: Shinjidai, an incredible interplanetary adventure about three young boxers,” the tweet reads. “Together they learn how to enhance individual powers by connecting to each other and to the legendary fighters that came before.”

Creed III, directed by Michael B. Jordan, released in United States theaters in March 2023. The film earned $275.3 million at the worldwide box office off of a $75 million budget, leading Jordan to say more Creed projects were in the works.

“You will see the Creed-verse continue to grow and expand,” he told Screen Rant. “I think that we invested in some really interesting characters that I think a lot of people were responding to. I have to give a political answer to that. [laughs] There’s going to be more of the Creed family, and there’s gonna be more of some of the characters that you love from this movie. I just don’t know what package it’s going to be in yet.”

Michael B. Jordan and Creed III’s anime influence

Jordan has also spoken about Creed III’s anime influence, as he told Polygon that Naruto, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Dragon Ball Z, among others, were inspirations for the movie.

“I watch anime every day,” he said. “It’s like these images are burned into my head. So when I was in preproduction and putting together the fight choreography, it was just second nature to me to reach for that.”

Bottoms, meanwhile, is directed by Shiva Baby’s Emma Seligman. She wrote the screenplay alongside Rachel Sennott, who stars in the movie with Ayo Edebiri, Ruby Cruz, Havana Rose Liu, Kaia Gerber, and Nicholas Galitzine.
