Moviegoers want to know the latest The Expendables 4 box office predictions and whether the new movie will flop or succeed. How much is the film projected to make on its opening weekend? Here are the predictions that have been revealed so far.
The Expendables 4 Box Office Results: Is it projected to flop?
The early box office projections of The Expendables 4 stand at $15 million for the domestic opening weekend. (Update: The weekend’s box office results are in and The Expendables 4 earned $8.3 million, even lower than projected.)
Variety reported that Expend4bles is targeting a franchise low opening that’s even lower than The Expendables 3’s $15.8 million. The site reported that there’s a chance for it to end up with $17 million, but that’s still nowhere close to the $34.8 million or $28.5 million that The Expendables 1 and 2 opened with, respectively, at the domestic box office.
With a production budget reportedly as high as $100 million (via Deadline), such an opening is extremely low and will likely lead to its box office failure. The box office numbers of all previous Expendables movies have been listed below:
- The Expendables – Domestic Total: $103 million; Worldwide: $274 million
- The Expendables 2 – Domestic Total: $85 million; Worldwide: $314 million
- The Expendables 3 – Domestic Total: $39 million; Worldwide: $214 million
The first two films were saved by their overseas performance. However, even the international markets couldn’t do a lot for the third one. Now it looks like the fourth movie will also suffer with even the international audience may not show up.
Why The Expendables 4 is likely to fail
The Expendables 4 will likely flop due to excessive competition, poor critic reviews, the lack of Arnold Schwarzenegger, and a general disinterest for certain franchises.
There are multiple factors involved in the film’s potential failure. The first of those is the competition in September. After all, the movie has been sandwiched between multiple horror movies, The Equalizer 3, and The Creator.
While both The Equalizer 3 and The Nun II opened with over $30 million domestically, The Expendables 4 isn’t pulling off a similar result. That’s also because some audiences losing interest in certain long-drawn action movie franchises in 2023. Movies like Mission: Impossible 7 underperformed, while Indiana Jones 5 was a major flop. Now, Expend4bles could possibly be joining that list.
Another reason for that is its missing cast members. Part of The Expendables’ charm was the union of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, in particular, along with other veterans teaming up with Jason Statham. Not only were Arnie and several others missing from Part 4, but even Stallone took a back seat. The new faces didn’t get to add much either as it was mostly a Jason Statham show, which viewers had already seen plenty of in 2023.
