Netflix Renews Alice in Borderland for Season 3

The Japanese sci-fi drama Alice in Borderland is returning for a third season on Netflix.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has officially renewed Alice in Borderland for Season 3. Minyoung Kim — Netflix’s vice president of content in Asia Pacific — announced the renewal during a keynote talk at the APOS entertainment and media industry conference in Bali, Indonesia.

It’s unsurprising that Netflix would pick up Alice in Borderland for another season, given the show’s massive success thus far. When Season 2 dropped last December, it became Netflix Japan’s most-watched title in history — surpassing even the platform’s anime titles. The series also amassed 200 million viewing hours worldwide, cracking Netflix’s Top 10 in over 90 countries and claiming the top spot in 17 of them.

What is Alice in Borderland about?

Alice in Borderland is based on the manga of the same name by Haro Aso. The series centers on obsessive gamer Ryōhei Arisu (Kento Yamazaki) and mountain climber Yuzuha Usagi (Tao Tsuchiya). The two mysteriously find themselves in a desolate, alternate-reality version of Tokyo, where they are forced to compete in dangerous games in order to survive.

The live-action series premiered its first season on Netflix in December 2020, with Season 2 arriving almost exactly two years later. In addition to Yamazaki and Tsuchiya, it stars Nijirō Murakami, Ayaka Miyoshi, Dori Sakurada, Aya Asahina, and more. Shinsuke Sato serves as director and co-writer.

Alice in Borderland Seasons 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Netflix. Season 3 does not yet have a release date.
