Netflix Sued by Evil Genius Games Over Canceled Rebel Moon Game

Tabletop role-playing game publisher Evil Genius Games has sued Netflix over a game based on the upcoming Zack Snyder movie Rebel Moon.

Why is Netflix being sued by Evil Genius Games?

Evil Genius Games has released a press statement announcing that it is suing Netflix for allegedly “wrongfully terminating Evil Genius’ contract to create a tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) for the widely anticipated Rebel Moon film franchise by Zack Snyder.”

According to the statement, the game company began working with the streamer in early 2023 and “signed an official agreement with Netflix on March 22, 2023” to develop the Rebel Moon tabletop game. It also states that Evil Genius Games stopped working on other projects to focus on the Rebel Moon one, creating a World Bible, Player’s Guide, and Game Master’s Guide for it.

The statement then says that Netflix terminated its agreement with the game company on May 25, “claiming the company had violated confidentiality provisions in its contract by sharing artwork at an industry trade show one month earlier.” The lawsuit states that Netflix had approved the use of the art at Game Manufacturers Association Exposition, then notes that Netflix told Evil Genius games that all work on the project “belongs solely and exclusively to Netflix” and refused to release the game or compensate the company.

“Our aim is to ensure our team is recognized for their fantastic work, and that we can release this game for millions of TTRPG enthusiasts to enjoy,’’ David Scott, Evil Genius’ CEO stated. “It’s disheartening to see Netflix backpedal on content that was jointly showcased and had received their prior consent. We urge our supporters to contact Netflix and Zack Snyder to push for the release of this game.’’
