Mortal Kombat 1‘s Creative Director Ed Boon has teased the possible inclusion of a horror icon as a downloadable character in the game.
Boon posted an image of multiple horror characters such as Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Chucky, and Leatherface. Each one that has appeared in a previous Mortal Kombat game has a green tick above its head. The rest have green question marks.
A Mortal Murder Mystery
The five in the image that have yet to appear are Chucky, Pinhead, Billy the Puppet from Saw, Michael Myers, and Ghostface. It seems like that last one could be the answer.
Earlier this month, thethiny on X (formerly Twitter) put out a post about datamined DLC characters for Mortal Kombat 1 and found evidence of Ghostface in there alongside series regulars such as Noob Saibot, Kotal (who has He-Man and Conan variants), and Cassie Cage.
The tease from Boon suggests we could see a timely Halloween announcement incoming.
Ghostface is more a costume than a single person, with a different killer or killers in each of the films, and even in Ghostface’s Dead by Daylight appearance, it was another new character in the costume.
One horror icon that won’t be on the roster is Bruce Campbell’s Ash from Evil Dead, as Campbell isn’t keen on the idea.
Guest horror movie characters have been a staple since Freddy Krueger appeared in Mortal Kombat 9. Mortal Kombat X and 11 also featured the likes of The Predator, Xenomorph, Robocop, Terminator, and The Joker alongside horror icons like Jason Voorhees and Leatherface.
For Mortal Kombat 1, comic book characters such as Omni Man from Invincible, Homelander from The Boys, and John Cena’s Peacemaker are the first licensed characters in the current game.
Mortal Kombat 1 is currently available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
