The Netflix production of its limited series The Perfect Couple was disrupted this week by local SAG-AFTRA picketing.
According to a recent report from Deadline, the series was filming in Nantucket, Massachusetts this week when they were met with local protestors. Speaking to a local strike Captain in the area, the individual confirmed that they had heard filming would be underway, with Netflix looking to film people driving cars around — a job that normally would go to a union member.
“They’re messing with our money,” one Massachusetts actor said to Deadline.
What is The Perfect Couple about?
The series, which is based on the Elin Hilderbrand novel of the same, is set to star Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, and Dakota Fanning. None of the stars of the series were on hand for filming, however, as they continue to take part in the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.
“Netflix was trying to film pedestrians and make them unintentional scabs. They didn’t get to do it. IATSE didn’t cross the picket line and they didn’t get the filming done,” one SAG-AFTRA captain told Deadline before going to mention that Hilderbrand was on hand for the filming and not happy with the stoppage. “(author) Elin Hilderbrand confronted us in the morning and said we were crushing her dreams. Reamed us out and stomped off in tears.”
Despite the picketing, Deadline reported that filming for the series wasn’t completely shut down. Production has reportedly moved elsewhere for filming. It’s unclear if the studio will continue to take the same tact.
