The 2002 supernatural horror feature The Ring, based on the Hideo Nakata-helmed 1998 Japanese film, will be getting a 4K UHD treatment alongside its other two sequels, including The Ring Two (2005) and Rings (2017). The Ring 4k Ultra HD + Blu-ray collection will be released on December 12, 2023.
The latest Blu-ray collection, which will be distributed by Scream Factory, comes with a six-disc set. The box set costs $89.98 and is available for pre-order via Amazon.
What Is The Ring About?
Starring Naomi Watts, the film centers on an urban legend surrounding a cursed videotape that kills the viewers after exactly seven days. Journalist Rachel Keller (Watts) was initially skeptical about the story until she discovered that several teen deaths were connected to the tape. Eager to investigate the case, she watches the video herself and quickly learns that the urban legend was true all along — and that she has only seven days left to unravel the mystery before it’s too late.
Aside from Watts, The Rings also stars Martin Henderson as Noah Clay, Rachael Bella as Rebecca Kotler, Amber Tamblyn as Katherine Embry, Brian Cox as Richard Morgan, Shannon Cochran as Anna Morgan, David Dorfman as Aidan Keller, Lindsay Frost as Ruth Embry, Jane Alexander as Dr. Grasnik, and Daveigh Chase as Samara Morgan, the popular horror villain also known as Sadako Yamamura in Koji Suzuki’s Ring novel series.
The first installment is followed by The Ring Two, which was released in 2005, with the third installment arriving more than a decade later.
The Ring Served as a Catalyst for American Remakes of Various Asian Horror Films
The Ring came as a surprise for the American market, bringing in favorable box office revenue and positive responses from both critics and audiences. The release of The Ring also inspired a plethora of American releases based on several Asian horror flicks. In fact, the early 2000s saw a number of horror releases inspired by successful Asian horror films, including The Grudge, Dark Water, One Missed Call, Shutter, The Eye, and The Uninvited, though some fell short of the legacy of their source material.
