Now that Sex Education has come to an end with Season 4, series creator Laurie Nunn revealed why it is the best season to say goodbye to the people of Moordale.
Netflix’s hit comedy-drama series undoubtedly launched its stars careers to new heights, most especially Ncuti Gatwa, who will be leading the next season of Doctor Who. The actor also starred in the record-breaking film Barbie alongside Sex Education co-stars Emma Mackey and Connor Swindells. Simone Ashley, on the other hand, left the show to focus on Bridgerton.
Sex Education Cast Members Can’t Play Teenagers Forever
When asked about how the stars venturing into other projects influenced the creatives’ decision to end the show with only four seasons, the series creator told The Hollywood Reporter that there should always be an endpoint to everything.
“I think they’re all just doing so well. It’s wonderful to see that. Our casting director Lauren Evans is brilliant at finding these really talented new actors, and I think that’s the real joy of a teen show; that you get to work with these real up-and-coming actors and mold characters around them. I think the fact that Ncuti is going to be Doctor Who is just so cool,” said Nunn.
The screenwriter added that the show could have continued, but all of the actors are much older now. For example, Asa Butterfield and Mackey — who portrayed Otis Milburn and Maeve Wiley through seasons one and four — joined the series at age 23.
Nunn continued, “We’re all much older than when we started, so I think with a teen show, there’s always a sort of endpoint because people can’t play teenagers forever. But, yeah, it definitely felt like the right time to bring it to a close.”
The End of an Era
Sex Education drew a massive number of viewers when it debuted on the streaming platform in 2019. The coming-of-age series received praise for its courage to touch on sensitive topics, including gender identity, reproduction, body image, teenage pregnancy, abortion, sexual assault, and everything else that comes with being a teenager. Though the show is well-known for its comedic element, it has never strayed too far from its roots of exploring delicate themes.
Without a doubt, the show’s characters left a mark on the show, so expanding the series with new characters may probably not fare well. But while the end of Sex Education also means the end of a wonderful era for television, it is also ideal to end it with Season 4, considering that exploring new story arcs may cause the show to lose steam in the process.
